Monthly Photo Themes for 2012

JAN - EYES MAY - ROCKS SEP - ANIMALS
This month members are challenged to find an eye or eyes that are interesting and post a great photo. Humans, animals and insects all have eyes, but there are other "eyes": black-eyed susan; eye of a needle; eye of a storm, eye of newt. Be creative and think of something beyond the obvious. Challenge yourself to go beyond just taking pictures of rock outcroppings. In addition, try "finding yourself in the rocks!" Photograph formations that look like faces, body parts, or other familiar objects. Be on the lookout for things made out of stones and your photos will rock. Wildlife, livestock, pets, your next-door neighbor, the possibilities are endless. Consider doing an animal portrait, or visiting a zoo. When ever photographing animals try and catch them doing something - hunting, eating, playing, etc. - this will make your image more interesting.

FEB - MACRO JUN - SHOW MOTION OCT - TEXTURE
Your assignment is to photograph the macro world and capture views of color, design, shape, and form using a macro or close-up lens. Using a lens that allows you to get super-close you can photograph the whiskers of your pet cat, a fragile Christmas ornament, soap bubbles, and more. There is an entire world that we often overlook because we don't get close enough. Photograph something in motion and present it in an image in a way we cannot see with the naked eye. Using the shutter speed control on your camera to freeze action and/or blur movement. Try panning on your moving subject to blur the background. Zoom your lens during a long exposure. Photographing texture is all about emphasizing patterns, colors, depth, and light - the best light for photographing texture usually comes from a low angle or oblique angle to the subject.

MAR - WINDOWS JUL - PATHS/ROADS NOV - TREES
A window, like a door, is a portal to another world. You can find windows everywhere, in buildings, on trains, buses, planes, cars, boats, etc. They can be stained, clean, broken, open, closed, shuttered or just be openings in walls or nature. Photograph them as you "see" them. Photograph the land routes people, animals, or things take to get from here to there. Make a photograph featuring a path, road or trail that leads the viewer through the photograph. Trees come in an infinite variety of types and shapes and sizes. Some are tall while others are short. Some are alive with leaves while others are dead and leafless. Photograph parts of a tree - its bark, leaves or roots - or things growing on the tree. Show us your vision of what "trees" means.

APR - LANDSCAPES AUG - ANTIQUES DEC - MUSIC
Landscape is defined as a section or expanse of land or territory, usually extensive, that can be seen in a single view. Explore various types of landscapes, urban, natural, industrial, etc. Don't just envision the beautiful but look for desolation and decay - e.g. life on the edge. An antique is defined as an object belonging to or made in an earlier time - usually over 100 years ago. But for this assignment you can expand the definition to include objects from another era, such as the 1940's or 50's - vintage items. Visit a local flea market and see what you can find. Your first thought may be to photograph a musical instrument, musician, ensemble, or score. Expand your vision to capture people listening to music, or places where music is being performed, etc.
